What Is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a treatment that uses a concentrated form of your own blood plasma, rich in platelets. A small sample of blood is taken and processed to increase the concentration of platelets above normal levels. These platelets contain growth factors that support tissue repair, healing, and skin regeneration.

How PRP Works?

PRP works by delivering a high concentration of growth factors directly into the targeted area. These growth factors help to stimulate cell renewal, support tissue repair, and encourage collagen production. This process enhances the skin’s natural regenerative response, improving overall skin quality and function over time.

A Biological Approach to Skin Conditions

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is an advanced biological treatment within medical practice. This technique utilises concentrated growth factors from the patient’s own blood to promote cellular repair and regeneration in skin affected by specific conditions or physiological changes.

The growth factors contained in platelets are able to stimulate different mechanisms to produce collagen and improve the quality of the existing collagen. Areas include:

  • Acne scars –  PRP promotes tissue repair and collagen remodelling to improve the appearance of atrophic scarring.
  • Under eye dark circles –  Improve skin quality and thickness in the periorbital area, which may contribute to the appearance of dark circles.
  • Rosacea – PRP’s role is improving barrier function and reducing inflammation.
  • Ageing skin – Address physiological changes associated with skin ageing, such as reduced collagen, skin laxity, and textural changes.

In addition to facial applications, PRP is also utilised as a medical treatment to support hair follicle health and promote hair growth in certain types of alopecia.

PRP Treatment Benefits

PRP treatments have many benefits, including:
  • Stimulates collagen and elastin
  • Addresses thinning skin
  • Efficient treatment protocol with focused therapeutic action.
  • Improves overall skin health
  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Tailored to your skin type

PRP supports both skin rejuvenation and hair restoration by stimulating natural biological processes. In the skin, it promotes collagen and elastin production, helping to improve texture, tone, and firmness. In the scalp, PRP can help activate dormant hair follicles and support healthier hair growth in suitable patients.

Treatment Process

The PRP treatment process involves several steps. A small amount of blood is taken from your arm and placed into a centrifuge, where it is spun to separate the platelet-rich plasma from other blood components.

Once prepared, the concentrated plasma is carefully injected into the treatment area. A topical anaesthetic may be applied beforehand to improve comfort. The procedure is typically straightforward and carried out within a clinical setting.

Recovery & Aftercare

Recovery following PRP treatment is generally quick, with most patients able to return to normal daily activities shortly after the procedure. Mild side effects such as redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site can occur and usually settle within a few days.

Patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activity for a short period and to follow personalised aftercare guidance provided during their appointment.

FAQs For Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy

Prior to treatment a topical local anaesthetic will be applied to the skin of the injection site for 20-30 minutes. During this time a small amount of blood is taken from your arm and placed into a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins the blood in order to separate the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma, the plasma is then injected into the skin to stimulate growth factors and fibroblast cells.

The fibroblast cells are stimulated to produce new collagen, which contributes to improved skin structure, firmness, and overall health.

Prior to treatment a local anaesthetic cream is applied to minimise any effects and make the treatments more comfortable.

The whole procedure takes from 30 minutes, depending on the area(s) to be treated.

Visible improvements typically develop over several weeks following a course of treatments. The longevity of the therapeutic effects can vary, often extending for many months, and maintenance sessions may be recommended to sustain optimal skin health.

Due to using the body’s own Plasma, there are few side effects associated with PRP. After treatment some common injection-related reactions might occur. These reactions may include redness, swelling, pain, itching, bruising and tenderness at the treatment site. They have generally been described as mild to moderate and typically resolve spontaneously a few days after treatment.

Safety & Candidacy

PRP is considered a safe treatment as it uses your own blood, which significantly reduces the risk of allergic reactions. However, as with any injectable procedure, there are some potential risks, including infection, bruising, or minor tissue irritation.

Suitability for PRP treatment varies between individuals, and outcomes can differ depending on factors such as skin condition, overall health, and treatment area. A full consultation is required to determine if this treatment is appropriate for you.
