SCULPTRA

Sculptra is an FDA-approved injectable medical therapy designed to address age-related collagen loss and manage the clinical presentation of facial lines and volume deficits. It is increasingly utilised by medical professionals for these indications.

This treatment employs poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a biocompatible and biodegradable synthetic material, to stimulate endogenous collagen production. This process aims to progressively restore facial volume and improve skin structure. Sculptra is intended to provide results that are consistent with natural facial anatomy and can be considered as a non-surgical option for managing certain age-related structural changes.

What is Sculptra?

Sculptra is classified as a collagen bio-stimulator, designed to also provide volumisation. It is composed of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a substance with an established safety profile from over 25 years of medical use, and is derived from renewable resources. PLLA particles work by initiating a controlled inflammatory response that signals fibroblasts to produce new collagen. This neocollagenesis aims to improve skin firmness and structure, thereby addressing the clinical presentation of facial folds associated with volume depletion.

Introduced in 1999, Sculptra is administered globally by trained medical professionals as a series of injections, with treatment protocols tailored to individual patient assessments and clinical needs. Rather than directly filling a wrinkle, Sculptra involves the placement of PLLA microparticles. As these particles biodegrade, they stimulate localised collagen production, leading to a gradual restoration of dermal thickness and volume

Frequently Asked Questions

The clinical effects of Sculptra are typically maintained for approximately 2-3 years, although individual patient experiences regarding duration may vary.

They are different substances. Dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid and Sculptra PLLA. Sculptra stimulates collagen, whereas dermal fillers add volume to even skin texture.

The most appropriate treatment, whether Sculptra or another medical option such as hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers, depends on a comprehensive medical assessment of your specific clinical indications, the anatomical area requiring treatment, and the nature of the age-related changes (e.g., volume depletion vs. dynamic lines). A personalised medical treatment plan will be recommended following your consultation.

A topical numbing cream is applied to the skin before thoroughly cleaning the area. The solution is injected beneath the skin and gently massaged to ensure even distribution. Sculptra also contains lidocaine for added comfort.

You may see some immediate results, but these are usually temporary. As collagen increases, results will become more noticeable, usually around 2-3 months. The results will continue to show as more collagen is produced in the coming months.

You may experience a small amount of swelling and bruising post-treatment, but most patients resume their daily activities immediately following the treatment.
