What Is Melasma?

Melasma, also known as chloasma, appears on the skin as patches in varying shades of brown.  This common skin condition is mostly seen in the facial area, usually on sun-exposed facial areas such as the cheeks, chin, temples, and forehead. It falls under the category of hyperpigmentation disorders.

An excess of the skin pigment melanin causes melasma. Its one of those conditions thats very difficult to pin-point the exact cause. The main culprits are listed below.

Melasma Triggers

Hormonal influences

Anything that causes a change in hormone levels could cause melasma to appear. Hormone level changes that could be caused by menopause, certain hormone therapies, and birth control pills are all possibilities for triggering melasma.

Sun Exposure

Doctors are unclear on the mechanisms, but sunlight is one of the most offered reasons for an outbreak of melasma. This is due to the fact that melasma is mostly found on the areas of the body that get the most sun exposure. Evidence points to the ultraviolet wavelength. Tanning salons and sun lamps may also be a factor in triggering melasma.

Medications And Skin Care Products

These are the least common trigger but could still be a factor in your case of melasma. Some medications make your skin more sensitive to the sun.  Medication that could be the cause include retinoids, certain blood pressure medicine and anti-seizure medicines, and possibly antibiotics.

It is thought that skin products that have caused irritation could be a trigger for melasma

During your consultation, please bring a list of all the medications you have been taking in order to help with the diagnosis.

Genetic disposition

Again, little is understood why, but melasma is more likely to develop if you have a family history of the condition.

It might be the case that a combination of factors is at play when it comes to the triggering of melasma.

People who have darker skin tones tend to be more prone to developing melasma

Stress

It is thought that stress, through an increased level of cortisol, can trigger melasma in some people.

Diet

Studies have been carried out to try to link diet with melasma. A link has been noticed with melasma and low iron levels in one such study, but it was by no means conclusive.

Treating Melasma

We have multiple treatment options available to you at Rejuvenating Solutions to treat melasma. We may offer one or more treatments, depending on your particular case and skin type.

1. Medical Skin Peels

We use 3 peel brands at the clinic. Enerpeel, Obagi blue radiance, and Tebiskin pre. Once we have examined your skin, we will decide if a skin peel is the best course of action or offer another treatment

2. Endymed Intensif

Endymed Intensif is a radio-frequency micro-needling treatment that inserts tiny gold-plated needles into the skin to cause what is known as micro-damage to the skin. The idea is that the skin looks to heal this damage and correct skin issues like pigmentation whilst doing so.

3. Endymed FSR

Endymed FSR is a fractional skin-resurfacing device. It works to stimulate collagen production within the skin. Its dual effect delivers radio frequency to heat the deeper skin layers and treat the skin’s surface with micro ablation.

4. IPL

IPL works on similar principles to the Endymed devices with regard to the goal of stimulating fibroblasts, which leads to the production of the proteins collagen and elastin.

Short pulses of light are directed at the pigmentation area to achieve the end result of improved skin tone and texture.  We use the Excelight IPL system here in clinic for many pigmentation removal treatments.

5, Obagi Nu-Derm

Obagi’s fantastic Nu-Derm system is regarded as one of the most effective treatments of its type for mild to moderate melasma. It is a prescription-only treatment and is classed as medical-grade skincare.

Rejuvenating Solutions has years of experience dealing with all types of skin pigmentation and can tailor a treatment plan to suit your particular needs exactly.

MELASMA FAQs

During your consultation, we will pose a few questions about the issue’s history and take some medical details. Your treatment options will be thoroughly discussed before we suggest the best possible treatment options.

We offer Endymed, IPL Medical skin peels.

You might be able to stop melasma from reoccurring if you know what is triggering it. Sun protection is always advised, regardless. Stopping medication associated with your case might be the key, but only under your doctor’s advice.

Melasma in pregnancy will probably improve after giving birth. It’s impossible to predict how much and when however. We would advise giving the melasma time to clear up post-childbirth before undertaking treatments.

Suzi has a wealth of knowledge! She always makes me feel at ease and talks me through everything. Giving me advice and guidance all the way. I would not go anywhere else for my treatments. Thank you all for all you do.
